Moments in HTM History *In July 1987, Hotel, Restaurant & Institution Management (HRIM) became an independent department. Michael Olsen was named the first Department Head. *The Hospitality Management Association (HMA) was established when the department was formed in 1987 with Becky Bays as the first advisor. The association was very active with catering events and representation at NRA meetings. Eliza Tse was the first advisor to Eta Sigma Delta, which also had a strong chapter *In 1989, SCHEV approved M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in HRIM. *In 1993, the department was re-named the Department of Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) to add the tourism component to existing hospitality programs. That same year, the HTM PhD was first ranked as the top PhD program of its kind in the world, based on work by Kent, W., Lian, K., Khan M. A and Anene, J. “College’s Hospitality Programs: Perceived Quality.” The Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, Volume 34 (6) 90 – 96, 1993. *The Green Garden started in 1993 based on a report submitted by Field Studies students. The name Green Garden was given by HMA which took over as their project, supported by department for operations and book keeping. *In 1998, HTM expanded the M.S. graduate program at the National Capital Region of Virginia Tech with Mahmood Khan serving as the Director of the program. *In 2002, the HTM program moved to its current home in the Pamplin College of Business. *In 2005, HTM celebrated the opening of the Inn at Virginia Tech, building on previous relationships at the Hotel Roanoke and the Donaldson Brown Hotel. *In 2009, the Virginia Tech HTM undergraduate program was named 6th in the world. No. 4, 451-470). *In 2011, Marriott established the J. Willard and Alice Marriott Senior Faculty Fellow in Hospitality Revenue and Financial Management. *In 2013, the Virginia Tech Hospitality and Tourism Management Michael D. Olsen Excellence Fund was established, an annual graduate student award to support hospitality finance and strategy research excellence. *In 2014, Nancy Gard McGehee was appointed as the first female VT HTM Department Head, notable in that it is a department with a consistent female majority in student enrollment.
